Chapter 28

After Colonel Blanton’s men were finished setting up their tents and cook pit, Blanton once again rode up to the palisade gates. Frank saw him approaching and whistled to Joe. Blanton sat and waited at the gates while Joe strode toward him.

“How can I help you, Colonel?”

Blanton reached two fingers into his left field jacket pocket. He used only two fingers so his actions wouldn’t be misconstrued, and he did it carefully. He pulled a small leather pouch out and opened it. After poking around in the pouch for a few moments, Blanton pulled out a few objects that were shaped like coins.

“These,” Blanton said, “are half-, quarter-, and eighth-ounce gold ingots.”

“What are they worth?” Joe asked. The front of each ingot had the same stamp of the United States Seal on the obverse, but each had its weight stamped on the reverse.

Blanton held them out for Joe to take. “A couple of very rich veins were discovered purely by accident while looking for something else just before the blackout, and mining continued after relearning how to do it without electricity and machinery. Anyway, since the influx of new gold, it has naturally dropped in value. It is now set at three hundred dollars an ounce. So, those three ingots are one hundred fifty dollars, seventy-five dollars, and thirty-seven-fifty, respectively. Like I said, the mint coins from before the blackout are still being used, just not the paper Federal Reserve Notes. Also, any gold coins from before the blackout will still be honored. Those with a face value in American dollars stamped on them will retain that value, but those that have either only a weight stamped on them, or are from foreign countries will be revalued by that weight.”

“So, I’m holding two hundred and sixty-two dollars and fifty cents in my hand right now,” Joe said. “Wow. Three coins worth over two hundred and fifty dollars.”

“Yes, sir, and we will be paying more for the two initial wagons. I believe it’s only fair.”

“Well, people will be glad to know that money’s coming back,” Joe said.

“Yes, but it will still be some time before money begins to outweigh trade,” replied the colonel. “So, I would suggest that whatever trade you have going, keep it up. It’s going to take some time for this new money to get into circulation.”

“Any thoughts on whether there will ever be paper money again, Colonel?”

“That, I really don’t know. I haven’t heard any talk about that, but I have heard that the old greenbacks are being destroyed as fast as they’re being found. The President doesn’t want what he considers ‘unconstitutional’ money used in our country anymore. And since all of the computers were wiped out, there are no electronic books left to say that we owe other countries the trillions of dollars that we did. Not to mention the Bilderbergs and Rothschilds and their world banks. Right now, the focus is on getting our own country repaired and revitalized.”

“You seem to know a lot, Colonel, about all these goings-on,” Joe commented.
